Position Description

Our Edmonton-based client is seeking an Application Database Administrator to join their team on a 1 year on contract with an opportunity to become a permanent member of the team for the right candidate!  As a member of the Information Services Department and reporting to the Director, Information Technology, you will develop, implement and maintain all operational, management and regulatory database systems by gathering, analyzing, and translating business needs into meaningful information. You will be responsible for liaising with the business and other parties to ensure consistent, accurate and comprehensive data management.

What You’ll Do

  • Have responsibility for the effective coordination, prioritization and management of business requests for data operations, and will take the lead on defining and delivering on improved, insightful information solutions and ensure responsibilities are fulfilled in a professional and competent manner.
  • Be a results oriented team player with excellent communication and interpersonal skills along with a positive attitude and have the ability to work well with other employees and customers.
  • Maintain a high level understanding of the Company’s products and services and the operating requirements of each Department.
  • Take an active interest and role in all facets of the Information Services Department.
  • Application Data Management:
    • Review and analyze data from multiple internal and external sources.
    • Develop and implement strategies for gathering data from operational databases and third-party vendors for inclusion in data warehouses.
    • Develop database objects and structures (tables, views, queries and stored procedures) for data storage, retrieval and reporting. 
    • Develop database objects to integrate data between systems using stored procedures and SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS).
    • Address data quality issues with management.
    • Ensure documentation is complete and up-to-date.
  • Data Analysis & Report Development:
    • Gather, analyze and translate business needs into meaningful information (e.g. management reporting, regulatory reporting).
    • Source, design, develop and maintain enterprise wide data analysis and reporting solutions.
    • Develop and maintain reports/data extracts for operations, management and regulatory reporting using reporting tools such as Crystal Reports, Microsoft Excel and SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS).
    • Develop ad-hoc reports as necessary.
    • Ensure documentation is complete and up-to-date.
  • Planning & Research:
    • Provide input regarding data standards and practices.
    • Research and recommend solutions related to data management and reporting.
  • Department Operations:
    • Participate in department projects and operations to achieve department and Company objectives.

What You’ll Bring

  • Previous experience in a role that required them to liaise with stakeholders, technical staff and service providers to identify requirements and implement solutions.
  • College Diploma in Information Technology (emphasis on database management and programming) or higher.  An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
  • 3 years’ experience in application data management, report development or similar role, ideally in a retail or commercial banking environment.
  • An intermediate level of understanding of database technology including relational database theory and practice.
  • The following technical experience:
    • Two or more years MS SQL Server experience including SQL programming experience.
    • One or more years Microsoft Integration Services experience.
    • One or more years Crystal Reports and/or Microsoft Reporting experience.
    • One or more years Visual Basic and Microsoft Excel experience.
    • Microsoft Access database experience is an asset.
    • Familiarity with software such as core banking and financial accounting systems
  • Business analysis experience is an asset.
  • The ability to work both independently and collaboratively while managing multiple initiatives simultaneously.
  • Strong research, analysis and problem solving skills and keen attention to detail.
  • A strong customer service orientation with effective oral, written communication, presentation and facilitation skills.
